A significant proportion of Harborview Medical Center's medically ill patients have co-morbid disorders involving addictions and mental illness.
Harborview Medical Center is a county hospital that has steadfastly served indigent and uninsured individuals of the region for over 60 years. For most of that time, HMC has been managed by the UW School of Medicine and has gained recognition as a full-fledged, modern academic medical center, leading to clinical advances and innovations as well as major teaching and research achievements. A significant proportion of HMC’s medically ill patients have co-morbid disorders involving addictions and mental illness which makes it a particularly suitable site for the study of these co-occurring disorders. Clinicians from a variety of disciplines including medicine, surgery, psychology, pediatrics, social work, and nursing, work together to care for these patients.
Harborview Medical Center’s strong research tradition delivered in the context of existing expert clinical care and training, provides a unique and important background for the CHAMMP center. Our investigators conducting research are also delivering care in this setting. Thus, by being situated at HMC, our team is staffed by investigators who bring a rich experiential knowledge base and perspective not usually found in a research center. Our medical CHAMMP investigators follow the Physician-Scientist model which makes them uniquely suited to design and conduct research focused on health care improvement.
